COLLAPSE OF SULTAN MIZAN ZAINAL ABIDIN STADIUM

Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium is the official court for Terengganu FC football club. This football stadium is located in Gong Badak, Terengganu, Malaysia. The stadium has a capacity that can accommodate 50,000 spectators. At the same time, it is the largest stadium on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium was built around 2008 when Terengganu hosted the Malaysian Games which was officiated by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin on 10 May 2008. The construction of the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium cost RM 270 million and became one of Terengganu's landmarks and a venue for several major sporting events. The stadium is also arguably the most sophisticated on the East Coast as it has various sports and other recreational facilities.

Unfortunately, something unfortunate happened at the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium. On June 2, 2009 around 7:30 am, the main roof of the stadium collapsed and caused severe damage that 50% of the stadium structure was destroyed. It has also resulted in a deer car and four motorcycles being buried. The collapse resulted in an 80 -meter -long roof out of 134 meters that covered the covered seating area and the Terengganu Royal stage. The collapse of the stadium roof is believed to be due to the unstable roof structure. The Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium construction project was carried out under the supervision of the Public Works Department of Malaysia (JKR) and it is believed that the contractor responsible for building the main roof was a foreign contractor from South Korea during the Terengganu Menteri Besar during the Idris Jusoh administration. At the same time, the problem became complicated when the Deputy Director of State Works, Ir. Ghazali Hashim said that the collapsed roof of the stadium did not get the Certificate of Completion which should have been issued by the Public Works Department (JKR). After the results of the investigation made by the Public Works Department (JKR), among the main causes of the collapse of the roof is due to inadequate design, the roof is not built properly according to geometric alignment, site quality control is not implemented and finally the material and quality of work is not meet the specified specifications.

Next, the same thing was repeated again where the old frame of the roof of the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium which was in the process of being repaired collapsed on 20 February 2013. In the incident, five construction workers were injured with three of them seriously injured. All the victims were taken out of the rubble and given treatment at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital. Since then, the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium has had to undergo a renovation process worth RM15 million and now the stadium has a new look and can be used by the Terengganu FC football team.
